Whale and dolphin watching in Sri Lanka: which coast, which month
The season moves between coasts. The south (Galle and Mirissa) usually runs November to April and the east (Trincomalee) May to October, while Kalpitiya in the west is known for spinner dolphins from about October to March.
National regulations set how close boats may go, and swimming is covered in our ethical safari code. Sightings are a seasonal chance, never a sure thing.

Where and when can you see whales and dolphins?
The Navy seasons set the frame for each coast, and the IWC handbook gives the species windows within them.
Mirissa or Trincomalee: which coast should you choose?
It comes down to the month you travel. Neither coast is better; each has its own season.
What will you see?
Blue whales are the main target. Bryde's whales and sperm whales sometimes turn up on blue-whale trips, and the IWC notes sperm-whale aggregations around March off Kalpitiya and Trincomalee.(Reported · last checked 23 Oct 2026) Off Kalpitiya, spinner dolphins are the draw.

How do you pick a responsible boat?
Ask whether the vessel is DWC-licensed and carries a DWC-registered guide, and whether they will hold 100 m from whales and 50 m from dolphins, avoid chasing or cutting across animals, and slow down.
Both the 2012 regulations and the SLTDA guideline apply. See the marine section of our ethical safari code.
How do you photograph whales responsibly?
Bring a long lens, stay seated and accept the distance. No drones; see the drone rules.
